The last line of defense before gas reaches the shaker

A mud gas separator — universally known on the rig floor as a "poor boy" degasser — is a vertical vessel installed in the mud return line to strip free gas out of drilling fluid before it reaches the shale shakers and mud tanks. It's called into service specifically during well-control events: when the mud column is temporarily underbalanced and a kick brings gas-cut mud up the annulus, the separator vents that gas safely to the flare line while returning degassed mud to the active system.

Fintelius fabricates every separator around the two numbers that actually keep a rig crew safe: the liquid-seal (mud leg) height that holds back pressure against the incoming gas, and the vent-line capacity that carries that gas away without building dangerous backpressure. Both are engineered before a single plate is rolled.

Well-Control Sizing

Expected gas rate, mud weight, and maximum anticipated back pressure size the vessel diameter, height, and mud-leg length.

Configuration Selection

Open-bottom, closed-bottom, or float-type outlet is selected against rig layout and mud-return routing requirements.

Shell & Baffle Fabrication

Vessel shell is rolled and fitted with spiral cascade baffles and erosion-protection plates at the inlet impingement zone.

Welding, NDE & PWHT

All welds are radiographed and ultrasonically tested; sections are heat-treated where code requires.

Hydrostatic Testing & Dispatch

The complete vessel is hydrostatically tested well above working pressure, coated, and prepared for rig-site shipment.

OB

Open-Bottom ("Poor Boy")

The classic configuration — the vessel base sits immersed in the mud tank, using the surrounding mud itself to form the liquid seal against gas escape.

CB

Closed-Bottom

A sealed base routes degassed mud through a dedicated return line to the tank — used where the vessel cannot be mounted directly over an open tank.

FT

Float-Type

A float-actuated valve replaces the permanent liquid seal, mounted on a fixed or elevated pedestal — suited to rig layouts needing a controlled, valved mud return.

Liquid Seal (Mud Leg) Height

A minimum 10-ft mud leg provides roughly 5 psi of back pressure at typical drilling fluid density — the barrier that keeps gas from blowing through into the shaker header.

Vent Line Sizing

Oil-service vent lines run 8 in. minimum OD; gas-service lines are diverted into dual 8 in. lines at ground level, oversized specifically to minimize backpressure.

Vent Line Routing

Lines run a minimum of 100 ft beyond the far edge of the reserve pit, with no valves permitted anywhere in the run to the flare.

Inlet Sizing

Inlet diameter matches the largest choke manifold line in service, typically 4 in. ID or larger, to avoid restricting flow during a kick.

Internal Cascade Baffles

Spiral, half-diameter baffle plates force mud through a longer path, encouraging gas to break out before the mud reaches the outlet.

Erosion Protection

Impingement plates protect the vessel wall at the point where high-velocity, sand-laden mud strikes the shell.
